February 4, 1910

February 4, 1910: Joseph Butler proposed the construction of a memorial to William McKinley in his birthplace, Niles Ohio. Here is the Niles Daily News from February 5, 1910, which covered the banquet at which Butler made the speech in which he made the suggestion. This was to be the first presidential museum. Presidential Memorials in those  days were either tombs, or monuments such as the Washington Monument. What Butler proposed was a building that would serve as a museum for McKinley Memorabilia as well as be a place that was/is useful to the community. Hence we have a library and an auditorium. http://mckinley.advantage-preservation.com/…/niles-daily-ne…
