Civil War food

McKinley was commissary sergeant at the time of the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. It was because of his ability and willingness during this battle to run the blockade and get food to his men that that he was promoted to second lieutenant. Here is a bit more about the rations the men received during the war.
