…that the National McKinley Birthplace Memorial was the first presidential memorial that was not designed as a tomb or monument? Previous Presidential monuments, such as the Washington Monument in Washington DC, or memorials such as the Lincoln Memorial,  were designed only to memorialize the President. Others, such as Grant’s Tomb or the McKinley Memorial in Canton, were actual tombs. Joseph Butler stated that he did not want just a plaque to memorialize his friend, but rather a building to be used by the community to house McKinley memorabilia, a public library, and an auditorium.
